Where to start, what to avoid, and why a clock that runs is worth more than a clock that looks right.
Buy the movement, not the case. A handsome case with a replaced or butchered movement is a decorative object; an honest movement in a tired case is a clock.
Fusee, longcase, carriage, bracket: each has its own following and its own maintenance rhythm. All of them need servicing, and none of them appreciate being moved carelessly.
Provenance and original components matter. Ask what has been replaced. A good dealer will tell you before you ask.
